Online shoppers and sellers warned of increase in robberies

Online shoppers and sellers are being warned that numerous incidents of robberies have been witnessed in recent months.

In a public advisory, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) says the crimes occurred after persons responded to social media ads, particularly Facebook, for items like cars, cellphones (particularly iPhones) and PlayStation Vs.

It says the offenders usually suggest a meeting point and, at that location, the unsuspecting buyer or seller is accosted by two or three persons who take the money or item intended for purchase.

The TTPS is asking online shoppers and sellers to be aware of sellers or buyers that:
• Request large cash sums and refuse cheques
• Are adamant about meeting at a particular location
• Request to meet on odd days and times
• Request to meet at known high-crime or underpopulated areas
