One activist suggests safe houses as an option for abuse victims

What options are there for women who need protection from men they share a dwelling with?

How can they preserve their lives and that of their children from the hurt and abuse experienced by abusers who refuse to let them leave?

President of the Organisation for Abused and Battered Individuals (OABI), Sherna Alexander-Benjamin says Safe Houses are one option.

Safe Houses are aimed at providing a safe and secure refuge for survivors of abuse.

But just how can they be accessed?

Alexander spoke with News Power Now are shared how those in need can use them.

She told our newsroom that there are several measures put in place to protect the safety of the victim when entering a safe house.

These measures maintained also protect other residents in the safe house as well as staff.

She said some of the safe houses provide counselling and skills training so that the woman is equipped to take care of herself and her children when she leaves.

She noted one challenge that arises when the woman leaves the safe house.
