Officers charged for planting evidence, stealing money

Three officers have been charged with misbehaviour in public office for allegedly planting evidence and stealing money from victims.

Constables Adrian Williams, Kern Alexander and Deodath Seepersad of Sipaira appeared Justice of the Peace at the Siparia Police Station on Friday to answer to the charges.

Two years ago, in April 2018, the men searched a house and claimed to have found 9mm ammunition.

Two men were arrested in connection with the find and were granted bail. A short time after, the victims claimed that the officers planted the ammunition and stole $7,000 from them.

An investigation was launched and the constables were charged.

The case against the victims were eventually dropped.

Williams was charged with one offence and granted bail in the sum of $60,000 while Alexander – who was also charged with one offence – was granted $75,000 bail.

Seepersad, who was charged with four counts of the offence, was granted bail in the sum of $150,000.

The matter was adjourned to June 26.
