Nurses Assoc. “the general public will begin to experience disruptions in the coming days”

“In 2020, the TTRNA would have submitted a detailed proposal to the Ministry of Health, seeking to obtain Hazard Allowance for Nursing and Midwifery personnel who work in unusually dangerous units and communities.”

This according to a post made the the T&T Nurses Association in light of a recent attack of a nurse by a patient at the St. Ann’s Hospital.

“In the absence of such hazard allowance. In the absence of a safe working environment and appropriate staffing numbers. St Ann’s Hospital, NWRHA, and the general public, will begin to experience significant disruptions in the coming days.”

The Association continued by saying that “while the Ministry of Health saw merit in our reasonable proposal, and forwarded same to the CPO for consideration, the CPO responded saying two (2) things:

1) The CPO office is not in favour of any category of staff in the public sector receiving hazard allowance.

2) If the nature of the job is truely hazardous, then the base salary should be negotiated accordingly to reflect same.

It then died a natural death.

Persons who are knowledgeable about the nurse who was so terribly attacked and injured by a patient, will know he is one of the kindest and caring professionals operating within SAH. For such an incident to happen to him, which will significantly impact his earning potential well into the future, is a bitter pill to swallow.”
