No reports of abuse have been received by the Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, at the Heliport  facility in Chaguaramas.

Minister Hinds said the Heliport facility is not a detention center.

However, it is an assessment center used where persons who have entered the country illegally are taken into custody.

The Individuals are quarantined, screened  for covid-19 and assessed to determine their landing status.

They will eventually be repatriated.

This was made known by Minister Hinds to the Senate Tuesday afternoon during the question and answer period.

Minister Hinds said children at the facility are allowed to be there with their parents.

Families are allowed to be together and are given meals which are also prepared by members of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard.

Minister Hinds said action was taken to repatriate certain adults from the facility but their detention orders were challenged.
