National award recipient Sister Phillis Wharfe has passed

She was well known and lauded for her outstanding work in education and the empowerment of women. Her Excellency the President Paula Mae Weekes presented Sister Phillis with the Media of Merit at her bedside after the National awards ceremony held on Republic day. Sister Phillis was a former principal of St Joseph’s invent in San Fernando for over a decade. Her students remembered her a tough, fair and supportive. She spoke French fluently and was always a staunch advocate of girls being fully educated to take there places in society. She was diagnosed with renal failure in 2006, and passed away this morning at hospital in Tobago. Our condolences to her family, colleagues, students and well wishers.
