Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Ready For Distribution

Biotech Moderna delivered “really promising results” on Monday when it unveiled a preliminary 100% efficacy of its vaccine candidate in severe cases of COVID-19. And everything indicates that the first Canadians vaccinated should be soon “after New Year’s Day”, according to an expert.

The pharmaceutical company on Monday filed for emergency use of its vaccine candidate with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as well as in Europe. The company also says it is ready to send its vaccine to Canada.

After announcing an efficiency of 94.5% in its preliminary results, Moderna reported an estimated efficiency of 94.1%. Better yet, the effectiveness against severe cases of COVID-19 is 100% it is assured. “We believe that our vaccine will provide a new and powerful tool that could change the course of this pandemic,” said Stéphane Bancel, CEO of Moderna.

“It’s really surprising to have vaccines that work that well. This gives really promising results for commercialization, ”suggests Luc Gagnon, vice-president of the Nexelis analysis laboratory, recalling in passing that these are still preliminary results.

Canadians can now expect to see the first deliveries soon. “Those who were ready to make a decision, even before having proof of the effectiveness of the vaccine, are guaranteed to receive the number of doses they ordered,” said Moderna co-founder Noubar Afeyan.

The Trudeau government “had the flair to seek them out from the start, because they were innovative in their approach,” said Gagnon, who thinks that vaccination could begin in the country shortly after the day of the year
