Ministry Of Social Development & Family Services Pleads With Landlords To Hold Their Hands In Evicting Tenants.

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services is pleading with landlords to hold their hands in evicting tenants who have not been able to pay their rent.

It says through its critical incidence mechanism, reports are being received from members of the public, as well as media personnel on various social issues that require emergency intervention.

In a media release Thursday afternoon the Ministry said these include reports of single mothers and their children being forced to turn to the streets following eviction and or domestic violence.

The Ministry of Social Development and Family Services said it is committed to ensuring the opportunity for a good quality of life is afforded to all citizens, particularly those within the vulnerable populations.

The Ministry said it continues to place focus on a more responsive and multifaceted social safety net system, where no one is left behind.

It said in this regard, among the various grants available is the Rental Assistant Grant where persons are able to access rent for up to three months in the first instance in the sum of two thousand five hundred dollars.

The Ministry said in this Grant arrangement, persons are assessed through a Standard Means Test and following this, there must be an agreement with the landlord to enter into a contractual agreement with the Ministry so that direct payments can be made to the landlord.

In the release, the  Ministry appealed to landlords to accept the issuance of the Rental Assistance Grant available to tenants in such circumstances.
