Minister in the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs, Renuka Sagramsingh-Sooklal has clarified the reason behind the sudden announcement of the closure of PriceSmart and other discount retailers.
In a Legal Notice published overnight, the Public Health Ordinance was updated, with the amendment coming into effect today – Friday.
These new regulations includes membership discount stores in the prohibited retail establishments.
In an interview earlier today, Minister Sagramsingh-Sooklal said “These discount / members shopping clubs, as we are aware, are not in the business of selling grocery items alone. There is clothes, appliances, and a list goes on.”
She said “With malls and retails closed, the information is that citizens are congregating in large numbers at these places to buy many of these items listed above.”
