Met Service monitoring new area of low pressure, AL96

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is monitoring an area of low pressure, AL96, near the central Tropical Atlantic and east of the Southern Windward Islands.  

According to the TTMS release, at 8:00 am today, the low pressure was located near 36W longitude (near 1610 km) east of the southern Windward islands, moving westward at 24/32 km/h. 

The TTMS says, “The area of disturbed weather is currently producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms. Environmental conditions are however, marginally conducive for development over the next few days. At 8:00 am today (1 July 2024), the National Hurricane Center has given the system a 30% chance of developing into a Tropical Depression over 48 hours and 60% over the next 7 days. 

At present the system poses no direct threat to T&T although moderate/heavy showers, isolated thunderstorms and accompanying gusty winds are in the initial outlook for mid-week. 

The TTMS will continue to monitor the area of low pressure for any changes. 

Currently, Tobago remains at a Red Level Hurricane Warning, while Trinidad is under an Orange Level Tropical Storm Warning.
