Officers of the North Central Division are on the hunt for two men who allegedly robbed a gas station convenience store in St Augustine, on Thursday.
According to a police report the men entered armed and pointed the firearm in the direction of the cashier and demanded he hand over the cash. The cashier became fearful and handed over approximately TT$8,000 from the cash register and the suspects also took various bottles of alcoholic beverages.
The on-duty security guard was relieved of his Samsung 13 cellphone and a customer at the store was also relieved of TT$400 cash.
Police were alerted to a robbery in progress and officers of the North Central Emergency Response Patrol Unit, responded. Upon arrival, the officers observed the suspects exiting the store and one of the suspects pointed a pistol in the direction of the officers and allegedly fired several shots in their direction.
The officers who became concerned for their safety and that of their colleagues returned fire. The suspects entered a silver Nissan Tiida and escaped in a westerly direction.
The officers gave chase which led them to Railway Road, Tunapuna in the vicinity of Tunapuna Market where the suspects exited the vehicle and ran off in a southerly direction, disappearing into the crowd.
North Central Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene and recovered a quantity of cigarettes and a Black Berretta Pistol with one magazine and 17 rounds of live nine-millimetre ammunition.
The vehicle was later found to bear fake registration plates. A search of the vehicle was conducted and a total of TT$2903 was recovered.
The vehicle was later impounded and taken to the station for processing.
Investigations are ongoing.
