Man seriously injured by suspected drunk driver

A 48-year-old man from Manzanilla is today warded in a critical condition in hospital, after being hit by a man who police believe was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Herbert Joseph was walking along Caigual Road in Sangre Grande last night, when he was struck by the 41-year-old driver. The impact shot Joseph into the air before he fell to the ground. He suffered broken arms and legs as a result of the accident. He was taken to the Sangre Grande Area Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and remains warded.

Police administered a breathalyser test to the driver after they smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath. His test showed a level of 35 microgrammes which is over the legal limit. The driver was also without his driver’s license or certificate of insurance. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to produce a certificate of insurance, and failure to produce a drivers’ licence.

He will appear in court today to answer the charges.
