Man charged with DUI, registered a reading four times over the legal limit

A Charlieville man has been charged with several traffic offences, including Driving Under the Influence (DUI), after being arrested by officers of the Central Division over the weekend.

Reports indicate that around 8:00 pm on Saturday, a police officer attached to the Court and Process Branch was proceeding along the southbound lane of the Uriah Butler Highway in an unmarked police vehicle when a grey Mitsubishi Lancer with a male driver, came into contact with it.

The driver, Randy Ramjit, then attempted to drive away but was intercepted a short time after by officers of the Cunupia Police Station.

The driver was asked to produce his driving documents which he failed to do and officers detected a strong odour of alcohol coming from him.

Ramjit was taken to the Chaguanas Police Station where a breathalyser test was administered and registered 146 microgrammes, 111 microgrammes or four times over the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.

He was subsequently charged with DUI, Driving without a Driver’s Permit, Failing to Produce a Driver’s Permit, Driving without a Certificate of Insurance and Failing to Produce a Certificate.

He is expected to appear before a Chaguanas Magistrate on November 13th.
