Police detained a Diego Martin salesman on Monday after the man claimed he was robbed of his employers cash during an incident on Friday.
However, that was not true.
The man, from Cuthbert Street Extension, Four Roads, told police that he was robbed by bandits in Auzonville Road, Tunapuna, on Friday afternoon.
He told police the bandits stole the company’s gold Fiat panel van, $10,000 cash from the day’s sales and other items.
Investigators from the Northern and Central Divisions searched several areas for the van, which they eventually found in Cunupia.
On questioning the man a second time, he confessed that he fabricated the entire story and stole the cash.
Police searched him and found $7,500 hidden in his socks, which they believed to be from the original cash reported stolen.
He was charged with embezzlement and wasteful employment of police time.
