Man accused of raping daughter tries to commit suicide

A 49-year-old man will appear virtually before a Point Fortin Magistrate on Tuesday to answer five counts of sexual penetration of a minor.

The suspect was arrested on Saturday following a report made by a 16-year-old girl that she was allegedly subjected to years of sexual abuse by her father.

According to the girl, the last assault occurred at 7.30 am on Monday 19th October at their home.

Following investigations, the Child Protection Unit (CPU) discovered that the girl was allegedly abused since the age of 11.

Upon learning of the report made to the police, the suspect reportedly ingested a combination of Malathion, power steering and brake fluids.

He was rushed to the Point Fortin Area Hospital and subsequently transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where he received treatment and was seen by the Hospital Psychiatrist.

On Sunday, the accused was discharged from the institution and taken into police custody.
