Labour Minister currently reviewing recommendations for increase to minimum wage

Labour Minister, Stephen Mc Clashie, is set to take a recommendation before Cabinet soon, concerning a proposed increase to the minimum wage.

Discussions on increasing the minimum wage from $17.50 to $30 began after the issue was raised by the trade union leaders during Labour Day celebrations on Monday.

Mc Clashie, in a GML interview, said: “The issue of minimum wage is always under consideration so it’s not something to be taken lightly. You would appreciate that when the minimum wage goes up and employers pay minimum wage their prices also go up and, therefore, it affects the cost of living so we are discussing it at our ministry right now.”

He said he is currently reviewing the recommendation to see whether it is workable going forward.

The minister gave no additional details, except to say that the recommendations will be taken before Cabinet within the month or two.
