KPB says PNM doesn’t want to give Tobago what it wants – autonomy

This PNM Government is pushing forward with legislation in an attempt to direct the future of Tobago as they see fit.

That’s according to UNC leader, Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Commenting on the self government bill for Tobago at UNC’s virtual meeting on Monday night, she said “This is not self government for Tobago it is Cabinet led Government for Tobago.

She added “The Bill debated in Parliament will not give Tobago greater autonomy – it will make Tobago more dependent on Trinidad.”
“The AG and Camile Robinson-Regis stand in the parliament and they don’t seem to know the law.
So leader of the House Camile tells the House, Tobago was made a ward of Trinidad in the 1800’s. That is not true. And then Faris repeats the lie , it’s not true.”

“Tobago was made a ward of Trinidad and Tobago, in the same way Chaguanas was made a ward of Trinidad and Tobago. In the same way Arima was made a ward of Trinidad and Tobago.
That was our state Trinidad and Tobago. The two came together in a Unitary fashion.”

She added “I do understand that the people of Tobago want greater self government.
The PNM can say what they like and try to spin this – but the fact remains that they are not serious about giving Tobago greater autonomy. They want to keep their chokehold on the people of Tobago, just as they want to do for Trinidad.”

Persad-Bissessar said the Prime Minister is from Tobago, yet he is completely out of touch with what Tobago wants.

She said “Let the people of Tobago determine the manner in which they want to govern themselves. The Government does not have the political mandate to speak on behalf of the people or even the majority of people in Tobago.”
