Kamla urges citizens to radiate God’s presence and goodness to those in need

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is urging all our citizens who are able, to acknowledge God’s goodness by offering acts of goodness to the vulnerable.

She issued the statement as she marked the occasion of Corpus Christi today.

Here is her full message:

Today, as I extend holy and prayerful greetings to the Christian community on Corpus Christi, I do so at a time when our nation is yearning for the sacred message of this blessed celebration more than ever.

The feast of Corpus Christi also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ celebrates the presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. In essence, this holy observance honours the presence of Jesus within the Church and His never-ending love for humanity.

With churches closed due to Covid-19 measures, the faithful have not been able to receive Holy Communion in the traditional manner, nor are they able to celebrate this occasion as they would have in years past.

However, as many families and citizens throughout our nation feel a sense of hopelessness and are broken by the loss of loved ones, loss of livelihoods and massive turmoil caused by the Covid-19 situation facing our nation, we are called to find courage as well as faith in the presence of God within our nation.

As a people, we must know that the presence, love and goodness of God will bring the healing that our nation so desires.

This Corpus Christi regardless of our faith, we must reflect on God’s greatest gift to us, his presence amongst us and be inspired that his goodness will prevail.

Corpus Christi serves as a reminder to us that God is always with us in our most difficult times.

I have often found great courage in Pslam 23 which tells us,

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”. In our darkest God is always with us”.

However, there is a deeper message for us all on this day, the message that we must radiate God’s presence and goodness to those in need.

Today, so many families are going without a meal, without the ability to afford medication and even put a roof over their heads due to the present state of emergency which has seen hundreds of thousands unable to work.

God’s presence amongst us means lending a helping hand to those in need. This Corpus Christi I urge all our citizens who are able, to acknowledge God’s goodness by offering acts of goodness to the vulnerable.

I urge those in authority to lead this healing by hastening the relief they have committed to our nation as many are facing peril.

I know the days have been dark with uncertainty and the futures of many seem grim, but we must remember that our citizens are amongst the most dynamic in our world and with God’s blessings we will remain a resilient people.

Let us continue to pray and be each other’s keeper.

May God bless our nation.
