Kamla: Those in authority must do more to ease the burdens of the vulnerable

Opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has issued a call for those in authority to not only echo Easter greetings but Easter actions.

In her Easter Sunday message to the nation, she said the Lord showed that he resurrected for the redemption of all, similarly, they must lead, govern and distribute our resources to ensure the rebuilding of all citizens emerging out of this pandemic.

She added “Those in authority must do more to ease the burdens of the vulnerable, and ensure that all citizens are protected and provided for.”

The following is the full message:

Each year, like many of around the world, I look forward to the joyous celebration of Easter.
As I wish our Christian community a happy and holy Easter 2021, I reflect upon its enriching message from which citizens across our nation can all benefit, especially during these tough times, as we continue to deal with the ongoing pandemic.

Today, as we mark the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are reminded that it is a period of renewal, a period of new opportunities and a time when we can all be reborn from the hindrances which affect our lives.

The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus is a symbol that the present burdens, difficulties and fear which keep us from achieving our true potential as citizens can be defeated through faith in God.

The Resurrection of the Lord Jesus is a symbol that the same way Jesus rose on the third day to redeem us, we all, no matter our circumstances, deserve happiness, success and prosperity.

Therefore, this Easter 2021 should mark a watershed moment for all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. It should mark the period where, in spite of our differences, we unite to rebuild the broken, unite to rebuild our dreams, unite to rebuild our nation and importantly, renew our national hope.

Our focus as a people going forward from the burdens created by the pandemic must be on rebuilding our country. The best way to rebuild our twin-island Republic is by each individual striving for their best knowing that the mistakes of the past do not define us as individuals. Each day through his resurrection Jesus redeems us from these mistakes, giving us more opportunities to succeed.

Today I call on those in authority to not only echo Easter greetings but Easter actions. The Lord showed that he resurrected for the redemption of all, similarly, they must lead, govern and distribute our resources to ensure the rebuilding of all citizens emerging out of this pandemic. Those in authority must do more to ease the burdens of the vulnerable, and ensure that all citizens are protected and provided for.
We have often heard the phrase “through God all things are possible”, and Easter reminds us that this is true.

This Easter, let us believe that a better tomorrow is possible for us all and let us work to make a better future a reality for all.
On behalf of my family, the United National Congress political party and the Members of the Opposition, I send my best wishes to the Christian community and to all citizens for a happy and safe Easter.
