Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has slammed the Prime Minister’s proposal for a specialist TTPS unit, with higher salaries, to weed out “bad cops”.
She said it was a totally insane idea at this time since it is unconstitutional and will create divisions among officers.
Speaking at a UNC meeting in Princes Town on Monday night, she said: “No way should you proceed with this, the UNC totally disagrees with this. How will you select people and what will be the criteria? To look for UNC people? There are no criminals on the UNC bench in the Parliament.”
“You’ll demoralise the rest of the service by paying some more. They want to blame rank and file police officers for crime when the reality is the Government is interfering in the operations of the Police Service.”
