Kamla maintains that President has no authority to make nominations regarding PSC now

On the heels of news that a fifth person has been nominated to the Police Service Commission, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, has reiterated that the President has no moral or ethical authority to make any nominations regarding the Commission.

In an interview with the Trinidad Express, Persad-Bissessar said the office of President Paula-Mae Weekes is mired in controversy and any appointment made by Weekes at this time will be tainted until all the questions regarding the PSC crisis are answered.

On Friday, the President nominated attorney Rajiv Persad for appointment to the PSC.

However, the Opposition leader said Weekes’ continued arrogance and aloofness are further destroying the image of the office of the President in the eyes of citizens.

She said the Government is hoping that by installing a new PSC, the citizens will move on from asking for answers regarding the interference issues but this will not happen.

Persad-Bissessar told the media house that the existing Merit List presented to the President should be sent to Parliament for consideration in accordance with the law.
