Kamla calls traffic fines a revenue collection scheme; says she will lower it when elected

Speaking at UNC Cottage Meeting in Princes Town last evening, she said the ticketing and Demerit Points System is being abused by some police and licensing officers.

She said if elected she would lower traffic fines, calling them a ” scheme for government revenue collection.”

She added that traffic fines are too high. She said the country must explore alternatives to fines and suspensions, such as training and education except in cases of dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“We cannot ignore the Licensing Authority’s heavy-handed tactics, which have turned our roads into battlegrounds of daily roadblocks and traffic jams,” she said. “This is not about road safety. It is yet another tax drive by the Government, using the licensing authority to raise revenu
