Kamla calls recent parliament sitting a “travesty of justice”

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the UNC will not allow the PNM’s Section 36 fiasco to destroy our democracy.

In a release on Friday, she stated:

October 21st, 2021 will go down in infamy as the day this PNM government used all their power to muzzle the democratic voice of the people of Trinidad and Tobago. One by one, all Opposition MPs and Senators were silenced by the Speaker of the House as they tried to express concern for the blatant trampling of our Constitution.

What happened yesterday (Thursday) in the seat of democracy was nothing short of a travesty of justice.
In light of this, the UNC has launched an “October Revolution” to end the perceived divine right of those who see themselves as Emperors who are above the law.

The UNC pledges to continue leading the march toward a modern Parliamentary democracy built upon the foundation of the Constitution and the law. This is the only governance structure worthy of our twin-island Republic. We make it clear that the UNC’s October Revolution is a peaceful revolution based on the rule of law and adherence to our sacred democratic constitutional principles.

It is also important to reiterate that the present constitutional crisis which precipitated the scandalous collapse of the Police Service Commission by nefarious lies, rests squarely at the foot of the Prime Minister and no amount of lying, bullying and posturing will conceal that fact.

Instead of telling the nation the truth regarding his interference into the workings of the independent Police Service Commission, Rowley instead hides behind the petticoats of women whom he has repeatedly denigrated.

At the sitting of Parliament yesterday, the Prime Minister proceeded to make a mockery of gender equality by attempting to fool the population by evicting his usual front-line male benchers and replacing them with his female Parliamentarians. The insulting PR stunt exposed his charade of promoting women in the Government.

This entire crisis was birthed by Keith Rowley and his regime’s continued interference in all our Constitutionally protected institutions. I again say thank you to the public and the Opposition team for keeping up the struggle in defence of our democracy and the rights of our citizens.
The Opposition will continue to fight and defend the rights of all from the attacks by the PNM and Keith Rowley.
