Kamla calls on nation to pray as Harewood-Christopher gets an extension

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said the nation must pray that Erla Harewood Christopher would be able to lead successfully in her second term as Commissioner of Police.

Speaking at the Opposition Leader’s fifth instalment of the Anti-Crime Talk Symposium at the Misir Community Centre in Morvant last night, Persad-Bissessar said she has a heavy heart over the one-year extension approved by the government

Persad-Bissessar said that she has no pain or trouble with Christopher, as she pointed out that the Opposition voted for her appointment in the Parliament.

However, she noted that all of Trinidad and Tobago is a “hotspot”, and she was worried about what would happen this year as the news of Christopher’s one-year extension does not provide any assurances that things will get better.

“Look at where we’ve come. The crime rate is the worst it has ever been in decades… No one is safe anywhere in any part of T&T”, said Persad-Bissessar.

“We have to give the police their due and we pray to God that Erla will be able to lead them in this year; but I tell you, my heart is very heavy in hearing this,” she said.
