Judge rules against Gary and Jacob

Justice Nadia Kangaloo in the Port of Spain High Court ruled Thursday the acting appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mc Donald Jacob and Gary Griffith is unconstitutional.
The ruling was made in an interpretation summons which was filed by social activist Ravi Balgobin Maharaj.
Mr Maharaj had petitioned the court to rule on the procedure set out in section 123 of the Constitution governing the power of the Police Service Commission to appoint a substantive Commissioner of Police and Acting Commissioner of Police.
On August 17th Mr Griffith’s three-year contract as Commissioner of Police ended.
On August 18th the Police Service Commission appointed Mr Griffith to act as Commissioner of Police.
However, on September 21st, Mr Griffith was suspended from duty while on leave, on the basis of an investigation into allegations of corruption in the granting of firearm licenses.
Mr Griffith’s suspension was subsequently revoked after he took the PSC to court.
Mc. Donald Jacob was appointed to act in his absence.
