Japan shocks Germany with 2-1 World Cup victory

Qatar 2022 continued today to provide another footballing shock after Japan beat Germany in a thrilling end to end encounter.

Similar to Argentina’s defeat to Saudi Arabia yesterday, Germany went ahead with a penalty in the first half before Japan clawed their way back with two goals in quick succession in the second half.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring from the spot after Germany was awarded a penalty when Japan’s goalkeeper attempted to slide tackle a German player in the box.

However, Ritsu Doan levelled the game in the 75th minute after slotting in a rebound following a Manuel Neuer save.

Japan then took the lead when Takuma Asano latched onto a long freekick from his own half to smash the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

The Samurai Blues then defended for their life for the remainder for the game to earn a memorable victory.
