Hindrances Continue To Delay Reopening Of Scrap Iron Industry, Laments Association

A lack of support requirements and systems to be administered by the Ministry of Trade and Industry is being cited as a major hindrance to the reopening  of the local scrap iron industry.

The Scrap Iron Dealers Association says many scrap yards are unable to purchase materials from collectors due to the delay in the provision of Scrap Metal Inspectors by the Ministry. Although some scrap yards are in possession of their Export License, they are unable to load and ship resulting in administrative barriers.

In a media release on Tuesday, the Association said it is working to assist as much as possible but due to this extended closure many small yards are forced to be closed permanently.

As such it is lobbying for Government to prioritize efforts to bring relief to this group that is being described as economically disenfranchised in this country.

Additionally, the Association issued a call for assistance in it food collection drive which seeks to supply relief for persons affected by the six month export ban earnings for the past 6 months without any governmental assistance.
