Health Ministry & UWI to test strains of Covid-19 in the Caribbean

There are currently 40,000 genome sequences of the Covid-19 virus.

Dr. Erica Wheeler, PAHO and WHO representative for T&T and the Dutch Kingdom Islands, confirmed the number in a press briefing on Monday, adding that the strains are not a mutation of the original virus.

Still, the Ministry of Health will be partnering with the University of the West Indies (UWI) to test strains of the virus, to determine which ones are found in the Caribbean.

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said he has been discussing the possibility of testing with Dr.Christine Carrington, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology
