Health Minister sees uptick in vaccinations, but tells citizens “do not become complacent”

Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh is urging the population to not become complacent.

Speaking to reporters at the Augustus Long Hospital on Christmas Eve, he said “The Omicron variant is our newest threat. Please don’t get complacent by the news that it is resulting in fewer hospitalisations.”

Deyalsingh said there has been an uptick in vaccinations in the lead up to Christmas, but he fears if people continue to congregate for the season, there could be a further upsurge in infections over the next two weeks.

“With a doubling rate of 2.5 days it means that thousands and thousands of persons could become infected in a very short space of time.”

Deyalsingh added, “Parties, gatherings, especially when you are bringing people from different circles and different webs together and those types of events, the corollary of that are that two weeks later you are going to get an explosion of cases. That is what will impact negatively on the health care system.”

The Health minister said on Monday on Tuesday they had an uptick of about 500 doses per day and hadn’t seen those numbers since November 22. “So in those 500 to 600 doses, my information is some of that was due to health workers coming out which I am grateful for,” Deyalsingh said.

He said special sites will be set up for the vaccination of health care workers and urged the population to be mindful of the sacrifices that have been made by health care workers.
