Health Authorities to bear cost of funerals of COVID victims when needed

The cost for the funeral of someone who has died of COVID-19 will be covered by the respective Health Authorities, but, only if the family members are unable or unwilling to do so.

On a normal basis, the family members take care of the funeral arrangements.

CEO of the North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) Ms. Salisha Baksh said at Monday’s MOH media briefing that the family members of the deceased are contacted and are given a list of qualified funeral homes to choose from.

Ms. Baksh said the families usually decide based on religious purposes or not and they will take care of their own funeral arrangements from there. However, she added, if a family is unable too or in instances where the mortuaries are becoming filled, the Authority would foot that bill.
