Haitian President Jovenel Moise announced on Thursday evening the confirmation of the first two cases of COVID-19 in the country.
Moise made the announcement via state television and also declared a “state of emergency” as well as a curfew in the Caribbean country.
“We have discovered the first two cases of the novel coronavirus in our national territory,” said Moise.
A few days ago, Haiti began to implement border closures as a preventive measure against the novel coronavirus.
“We ask everyone to listen to and apply the advice of the MSPP (Ministry of Public Health and Population). Together we will fight against the coronavirus pandemic,” added the Haitian president.
The Pan American Health Organization expressed its concern over the vulnerable condition of countries like Haiti in the first week of March and indicated that a special mission would be sent to assist during the emergency.
