Govt wants answers from police on protest

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds says he has sought answers as to how persons protesting against the closure of the scrap iron industry have this morning managed to block the highway without police intervention despite public claims that they will be taking to the streets.

The protesters have reportedly emptied what appears to be a truckload of gravel and dirt on the highway causing a severe traffic pileup.

While reports coming to our newsroom say the protests are affiliated with the movement to have the scrap iron industry reopened, Minister Hinds suggested that he has not yet been able to verify this information.

Minister Hinds said the police have, in recent days, arrested persons who have been protesting illegally in connection with the movement.

He maintained however that the Government will not change their decision anytime soon but suggested that the Government is open to discussing the matter.

He also addressed safety concerns for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations saying that the law and the systems are in place to respond to any disruptions on that day.
