Gov’t gives $2 million to assist flood victims

Cabinet has authorized the Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Senator Kazim Hosein to make $2 million available to assist those communities that were affected by last week’s floods.

The Office of the Prime Minister said via a press release this morning, “Even as we are still awaiting the assessment of the damage caused by extensive flooding and the waters have not yet receded completely the Government recognizes the need for additional resources to be made available to the affected Corporations to enable them to provide additional immediate humanitarian assistance.”

As a result, the communities will receive the following allocations:

  • Penal/ Debe-  $1 million
  • Mayaro- $500,000 dollars
  • Barrackpore – $500,000 dollars

This money is mainly for food, cleaning materials and other basic needs in the short term.
