Government Must Intervene To Prevent Further Food Price Increases, Urges Opposition

One Opposition Member of Parliament is calling on the government to commission the two Packing Houses built by the former administration during 2010 -2015.

MP for Couva North, Ravi Ratiram, says these two packing houses (Brechin Castle, Couva and Brothers Road, Tabaquite) were strategically located in high farming clusters.

Mr Ratiram says the objective of these packing houses was to reduce local food prices by reducing post-harvest losses and also to add value to locally grown root crops and vegetables.

The Brechin Castle Packing House was designed to accommodate a cassava flour-processing facility, but due to political victimization, these two facilities have been abandoned.

MP Ratiram reiterated the call for the removal of V.A.T on all basic food items that was done by the People’s Partnership Government.

He believes with the compliance and support of our supermarkets and groceries, this would help in stemming inflationary pressures and ease the current pressure on consumers.
