Ensuring citizens do not become totally dependent on financial support given by the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services is an area of concern highlighted by Independent Senator Paul Richards.
Mr Richards made the remark while giving his contribution to the Appropriation Financial Year 2022 Bill in the Senate on Tuesday.
Senator Richards cited the importance of the Ministry adding it can serve as a platform to help wean persons from their dependence on assistance from the government.
Mr Richards spoke about the implications which could arise from having a welfare driven society.
Senator Richards said even as Trinidad and Tobago manage the fall out of the Covid-19 pandemic, focus should be placed on ensuring equality among the population.
