Fuad Abu Bakr has been granted $75,000 bail.
Abu Bakr appeared before a magistrate via virtual hearing on Thursday afternoon to answer to six charges:
- obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty,
- three counts of assaulting a police officer at the Black Lives Matter protest at the Queen’s Park Savannah on June 8;
- using violent language to provoke persons to commit a breach of the peace and
- breaching the COVID-19 regulations during protests along Piccadilly Street, Laventille, Port of Spain on June 30.
Abu Bakr is reported to have used language that incited the protestors on Tuesday, as he encouraged them to block the roads.
His father, Imam Yasin Abu Bakr has since said that his son did no wrong.
Fuad’s Lawyer said that his arrest will be investigated.
Up to Thursday night, he remained in police custody.
