From Criminal to Christian: An inmate’s intro to Gang Life

This is Arnold Ramlogan, a 44 year-old inmate who has been in jail for the past 23 years. He has spent the majority of his adult life locked within the walls of the Maximum Security Prison at Golden Grove, Arouca.

Arnold was born on August 31st, 1975. At the age of 17 years, he committed his first serious offence- stealing a car with three others in San Fernando. As is sometimes the case in these situations, police intercepted the vehicle and chased Arnold and the others. They escaped, but not without injury. One of the men was shot and Arnold’s bravery, and his ability to evade the cops and return his injured companion to the ‘Big Boss’ of a local drug syndicate, was noticed by the local the Boss who saw potential in Arnold.

The kingpin noticed Arnold “had belly” and considered him an asset with skills he could use to execute assignments, and keep his drug business positioned at the top of the illegal drug trade in the early 90’s in Central & South Trinidad. He was soon recruited into the drug syndicate and given a role.

Arnold admitted that he had no idea what fate would befall him when he entered the organization, since at 17 years he still maintained some innocence about life. But that outlook soon changed when he was given a major role in the organization.
