Former PSC member suggests Bail Bill ineffective without judicial change

Attorney at law and former Police Service Commission Member Martin George says the timing of the failure of the Bail Amendment Bill is unfortunate for the Government.

The Bill was defeated in Parliament by a vote of 18-11 after the Opposition Senators and five independent Senators voted against it.

Speaking on Power 102 Digital’s Power Breakfast Show, Mr George said the Bill created difficulty as persons would have questioned the decision to attempt to extend it despite a challenge to the Bill before the courts.

Mr George also suggested that increased data and statistics would have supported the Government’s argument for the extension of the Bill.

He also criticized the effectiveness of the justice system noting that caseload management for magistrates and the DPP’s office needed to be better managed.

He suggested that without this, the Bail Amendment Act remained ineffective.
