Former NCIC President Deokinanan Sharma passes away

Former NCIC President, Dr. Deokinanan Sharma, has passed away at 87.

Sharma died on Friday afternoon after ailing for some time.

Dr. Sharma served the National Council of Indian Culture for several decades, most notably as President until 2023.

He was awarded the Humming Bird Medal (Gold) for his contribution to local culture.

NCIC executive member, Surujdeo Mangaroo, in a social media post last evening, said, “I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Deokinanan Sharma, a remarkable leader and former President of the National Council of Indian Culture. His dedication to the promotion and preservation of Indian culture in Trinidad has left an indelible mark on our community.”

Mangaroo added that Sharma was not only an influential figure but also a source of inspiration and guidance for many.

“His passion, wisdom, and commitment to cultural advancement will be sorely missed”, he said.
