Former Nat Sec Executive justifies the use of spyware as a crime fighting tool

Law enforcement cannot be caught out.

This is the view of Former Head of the National Operations Centre and Strategic Security Expert, Garvin Heerah as he justified the use of spyware by the authorities.

There have been concerns that the technology could be misused to spy on law abiding citizens.

This has led to calls by the Opposition and some members of the public on social media for total transparency by the Government regarding the use of the spyware.

Some have even questioned its relevance given the crime levels in the country.

However, Speaking with News Power Now, Mr Heerah noted that spyware is an important element of the intelligence gathering process.

Mr Heerah added that while its success could be questioned, the fact remains that communication intercepts is key to authorities staying ahead of criminals.

The former NOC head acknowledged the fear of citizens worried about invasion of their privacy.

In response to this, he suggested that the National Security Ministry does what it can to raise awareness of the rights of citizens and the powers of the state regarding the interception of communications act.
