Former Energy Minister Calls For Stiffer Penalties For Health And Safety Violations

There is a call for stiffer penalties against companies who violate health and safety practises.

The recommendation comes from former Energy Minister, Kevin Ramnarine.

Mr Ramnarine made the proposal during an interview with News Power Now, on Monday, as he was questioned on matters relating to the Commission of Enquiry into the Paria tragedy which probed the death of four divers who were doing maintenance work at Point-a-Pierre.

The former government minister said he is of the view complacency has become a part of matters relating to health and safety and this approach must be changed.

Mr Ramnarine also suggested after several years of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in existence considerations should be given to reviewing its content and making appropriate adjustments.
