Fire in Maraval – 3 children die

Three children, aged 17, 6 and 3 are now dead, following an early morning fire in Maraval.

Chief Fire Officer Arnold Bristo reported that they received a call around 7:56am this morning of a fire at Rookery Nook, Maraval, near the parking lot of RBC Bank.

He said when fire tenders arrived at the scene, they found the structure well alight and several persons were reported being trapped.

Bristo said when officers made their way into the building the found three youngsters burned to death.
They have been identified as 17-year-old Ezekiel Burke, 6-year-old Kate Burke and 3-year-old Cayden Burke.

Their parents Troy Burke and Genevieve Rodriquez and two other siblings ages 13 and 15 were rescued.

Witnesses reported seeing more than three children inside the first floor of the burning house and that at least two got out with an adult before fire tenders arrived.

Before fire fighters arrived, a man tried breaking through the walls of the house as it filled with thick black smoke and the screams of the victims could be heard.

The cause of the fire is not immediately known but police said that it did not appear to be maliciously set.
