Finance Minister Working With Supermarket Association To Expand List Of VAT Free Items.

Consumers are being notified that the Minister of Finance is working closely with the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago in the immediate aftermath of the national budget to survey a more expansive look at the widening of the basket of basic food items to be made free from Value Added Tax.

In a media release Thursday, the Association said the Minister of Finance indicated the initial list was open to expansion as formulated and subsequently evidenced in a data driven exercise to examine those items most often purchased by families in the supermarkets.

The Association said it is satisfied to revisit the list of items to be made VAT free with the Minister and his team next Wednesday in the national interest of ensuring consumers can access a form of relief by the removal of VAT during this period of food price inflation.

The Association said the Finance Minister also committed to reviewing the list periodically, where possible, given the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic.
