Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert announced that 33 % of adult males and 10% of adult females are or have used tobacco products.
Minister Imbert made the announcement during the Seventh Sitting of the House of Representatives for the First Session, Twelfth Parliament today.
Minister Imbert said that in 2018 $9 billion in advertising was spent on tobacco products; $25MUS every day in the sum of $250M TT dollars.
He also said that Trinidad and Tobago was recorded as having the 4th highest incidence of smoking among 13-15 years olds in the region.
Minister Imbert also said one person being treated for lung cancer costs TT half a million dollars in heath care.
Finance Minister Colm Imbert revealed that there was a 20% increase in excise duty on exported tobacco products, 20% increase in regional and international tobacco imported products.
