Fears of a second wave, as an inmate tests positive for COVID at MSP

A prisoner at the Maximum Security Prison (MSP) in Arouca has tested positive for Covid19.

This new positive case has raised fears that a second wave of the virus is likely to affect the prison population.

Acting Prisons Commissioner Dennis Pulchan, said the inmate, who was showing symptoms of the disease, was “picked up by my alert officers who had him rushed to the hospital.”

He said “We cannot pinpoint who or where but it seems the spike in the country is infiltrating all areas.” But he assured that contact tracing had already begun and tests will be carried out on inmates and officers.

However a GML report citing sources, is of the suspicion that the virus made its way back the prison walls via prison officers entering the system to carry out searches.

In November of last year, an outbreak within the system led to 260 inmates testing positive for Covid19.
