Expert warns persons to lead healthy lifestyle as Covid deaths related to comorbidities

Persons are again being reminded of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, as the COVID19 pandemic continues to rage.

Dr. Joel Teelucksingh, Consultant Endocrinologist at the SWRHA, warned that the majority of deaths have been persons who had co-morbidities.

This means that persons suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and diseases are more susceptible to fatal complications as a result of contracting COVID.

Dr. Teelucksingh noted that during the pandemic, persons around the world, including here in T&T, led a more sedentary lifestyle and in many cases developed poor eating habits.

He emphasized the importance of not only taking precautions to avoid contracting COVID, but also of monitoring one’s health and attempting to live a healthy lifestyle.

Dr. Teelucksingh singled out high blood pressure as the single most important preventable cause of premature death.

Describing it as a silent killer, he detailed the damage it could cause and explained what persons testing themselves with a blood pressure kit should look for.
