Government is being urged to improve its tax collection system.
This move, if done, can help ensure much needed funds can be directed in other areas to the benefit of the population.
It can also help reduce the budget deficit.
The assessment comes from economist, Dr Dave Seerattan.
Dr Seerattan gave his views while speaking at the Spotlight on the Economy, Friday.
Dr Seerattan said a better tax collection system can also result in reduced expenditure.
Meanwhile, government was commended for its decision to reduce expenditure and was urged to push to concentrate more on the establishment of the Revenue Authority and Property Taxation.
