DPP Calls For Challenges Facing Office To Be Urgently Addressed

Clearing the back log of court matters, addressing staff shortages and getting a suitable space for the North Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, these are cited as some of the priority areas DPP, Roger Gaspard S.C, will like to see addressed this year.

Mr Gaspard revealed this during a sitting of the Joint Select Committee on National Security Wednesday.

It inquired into the criminal justice system in Trinidad and Tobago.

This is to determine strategies to archive greater efficiency and effectiveness.

DPP Gaspard was asked by Chairman of the JSC, Keith Scotland, whether there was any specific legislation which believes if implemented and used effectively will aid in a better justice system.

He said legislation is only effective as resources allows.

Mr Gaspard said there are many indictments before the High Court for which there has been no trial and the abolition of preliminary inquiries may cause indictments to reach the High Court faster but he questioned whether accused persons would have faster trials.
