Dominica’s PM announces snap election…says he will resign by 2025

Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced a snap election and said he will resign as PM in 2025 even if his party wins the election.

In an address to the nation on Sunday night, he revealed that elections will be held on December 6th.

Elections were constitutionally due in April of 2025.

However, Prime Minister Skerrit said Dominica needs a national reset if the country is to fully recover from COVID and be put “back on a trajectory of real and sustainable development over the next 10 to 15 years”.

Skerrit also indicated that he has no intention of serving in office beyond April 2025.

He said that while he would be leading a new slate for the election, he wants to preside over the peaceful and dignified transition of Prime Ministerial leadership to someone of his party’s choosing.

Skerrit said the Dominica Labour Party will reveal its new-look slate of candidates on Tuesday, November 8th and Nomination Day in Dominica shall be Friday 18th November.
