DIQUD Chides Gov’t Over Lack Of Consultation On Scarborough Port Extension

Government held no consultation with the Tobago Division of Infrastructure, Quarries, and Urban Development over proposal to set up an 88 meter long guide jetty extension to the existing Scarborough Port Jetty.

In a statement on Monday, the Division claimed these plans have been drawn up and set in motion without any discussion, whether prior or otherwise, with the Tobago House of Assembly.

The Division said it is not only grossly disrespectful but it also trespasses on area 16 of the 5th Schedule of the THA Act.

Government has stated that plans for the redevelopment of Scarborough, which includes significant port development, have been widely publicized and discussed since December 2020.

The feasibility study, which followed the first round of public consultations, is nearing completion as evidenced by the master plan.

Discussions and collaboration on any Jetty or Port development would be well advised.

However, the Division said proposed construction flies in the face of not only principles of good governance, but also of the intentions of sections 31 and 37, which promote harmony in the affairs of Tobago and Trinidad.
